Birth To Five Center

birth-to-five

The Whole Child’s Birth To Five Center offers a home-based early intervention and prevention programs therapeutically designed to support the developmental and emotional needs of infants (age 0-5) and their families who are at-risk for developmental, psychological, behavioral, social or family problems. The programs empower parents to take an active role in their children’s lives. They strengthen the development and well-being of children in stable parent-child relationships to reduce and eliminate risk for abuse, neglect and/or removal from the home by protective services, which often results in foster care placement.

Counseling for Children Birth to Age Five

A therapist will work with parents and children together to address behavioral and emotional concerns. Services can be delivered in the home to help families address disruptive behaviors, heal from traumatic experiences and soothe emotional distress.  Your child may benefit from services if any of the following are present: excessive crying, difficulty feeding or sleeping, nightmares or fears, significant problems in social interactions with peers, siblings or adults at home or in daycare/preschool, extreme anger or aggression, exposure to violence or trauma in the home/community or family stress (divorce, homelessness, death).

Home Visiting Program

Parents referred through the Welcome Baby Hospital Program receive visits once or twice a month to provide interactive, developmentally appropriate activities and information on child development. Using the Parents as Teacher model, Parent educators work with parents to ensure their babies’ development. Parent Educators are Certified Lactation Educators and can provide breastfeeding support to women in the program. Parent Educators are also certified in Infant Massage and teach parents techniques to soothe their baby and promote bonding and positive communication.

The Whole Child receives referral from St. Francis Hospital, Linwood and White Memorial Hospital, East Los Angeles.

Developmental Screenings

Children ages 1 month to 5 ½ years of age are screened using the Ages & Stages Questionnaires (ASQ3) to determine if they are meeting their developmental milestones in the areas of Communication, Gross & Fine Motor Skills, Problem Solving and Personal-Social Skills. If needed, assistance in obtaining additional assessment and services is provided. Screenings are provided FREE of charge to the community.
